Citizen of the Year 2009

Each year the Rotary Club of Thomaston honors a member of the community for his or her unselfish service to the Town. This year we are pleased to announce Eileen Finer as this year’s Distinguished Citizen for her unselfish service to the Citizens of Thomaston. The most noteworthy way in which Eileen has served the community is through her efforts with a back to school clothing program for needy children, known as “New Beginnings.” She initiated this program in Thomaston in 1994. Each child receives new socks, underwear, two pairs of pants, three shirts, a fall jacket, and a gift certificate for shoes.

Because of her efforts, this most worthy program as expanded into a dozen of cities and towns including Watertown, Oakville, Terryville, Plymouth, Bristol, Naugatuck, Waterbury, and into Massachusetts. Throughout the fifteen years of “New Beginnings” thousands of children have benefited from this program.
